Turner Contemporary

While David Chipperfield building is a shell in construction, Turner Contemporary staff are organising a series of installations around town. Plans and models of the new gallery can be seen in the adjacent Droit house, on the Harbour Arm. Check out the Turner Contemporary website for details of events.

The Shell Grotto
Margate's wonderfully mysterious and amazing underground tunnels lined with over 4 million shells. It's one of the wonders of the world, right here in Margate. A Grade I listed monument. You can't come to Margate and not visit the Grotto.

Powell Cotton Museum

An eccentric and fascinating museum built by a Victorian adventurer Powell Cotton, who created a collection from his extensive travels across the globe. Large scale taxidermy displays, weapons, ceramics, art and archeology on a huge scale, displayed in original cases set in a stately home with grounds and gardens to explore. There is also a restaurant cafe and farm shop with fine quality local produce.

The Tudor House

Margate's oldest building, the Tudor House is a Grade II* Listed 16th century timber framed house restored is a great setting for readings and the anual christmas events. The house is opened by volonteers on an ocasional basis. If you visit the Indian Princess, it's right next door.

Dippers and Dunkers  

Started in 2008, the Dippers and Dunkers festival is an annual August weekend of  vintage themed new variety and burlesque.

The Theatre Royal

Just across the square from The Reading Rooms, The Theatre Royal is England's second oldest provincial theatre. They have a wide variety of performances and the panto is a must!
